Is the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell notion universal?

I read a question on here about somebody asking if somebody is gay. I see no harm in this question, personally, and feel that when somerbody is told to mind their own business, this is just a overt sense of self-hate and lack of self-acceptance being projected onto the person asking. This is common not only among gays but straight people. That’s why I ask, is the don’t ask don’t tell policy a more universal policy among the gay community? Straight people after all flaunt their sexuality all over the place, publicly, in magazines, with their wedding rings, by why not wonder who’s gay, or who a possible gay person is dating? I find straight and gay people don’t want to know and because it’s strangely, and ironically nobody’s business – but, only when it comes to gays. Is this true?

Wow…there’s no need for the anger displayed in response.
I for one am open about my lesbian status. It’s not a point I make in every day conversation purely because there is no need.
I no more want to hear of heterosexual exploits any more than I want to flaunt my own.
That’s not shame, that’s a personal choice.
What someone does in the bedroom is none of my concern unless it effects me directly.
I am a lesbian and have absolutely no difficulty in saying so should the topic arise. I also feel no need to hide it nor advertise it.
We’ve come a long way and have a long journey ahead.
